1600 Meeting Street
The 1600 Meeting Street project was a client-driven, multiphase development in Charleston, South Carolina. The clients had bought an old Esso office building, which had been built in 1926, with hopes of turning it into leasable buisness space for entrepreneurs in the creative industries. We were asked to expand their initial vision into that of a “Creative Hub” through a three-phase project.

This parti shows the progression through the site, and how moments are created by the building and their orientation.

A diagram of building programming. Red shows commercial buildings, yellow shows entertainment, and green shows eateries.

From the barren activity field, to the forested bosque, and the informal gardens, multiple zones and moments are created as buildings create a path.

A view of door and stair circulation on the ground floor of the buildings.

A view from Meeting Street showing the west facing panels on the sides of the buildings, which double to display the art of the leasing artists.

A garden designed to supply the restaurant it is tucked behind.

A rendering within the informal reflection garden looking south.

A stone covered plaza in front of the performance center at the northern point of the site where light posts simulate trees and create another moment of pause.
