Charleston Rapid Transit

The rapid growth that the City of Charleston and the Tri-County Area has experienced in the last decade has put a tremendous strain on existing infrastructure, requiring that we look beyond the traditional approach of adding lanes and highways. Inspired by a map created by Ben Cotton (Founder of Alternative Transportation Group), the map seen here is an attempt to further the discussion. Hoping to illustrate an even more feasible metro system that could be built in the near future, this map shows lines following existing high-travelled routes that could support the running and maintenance of a metro system for the area. It was designed with the mindset that these lines could be built in phases, starting with the red line and King Street Trolley, followed by the blue, yellow, and purple lines. Further expansion of the metro could move up the I-26 corridor if density of development can support it.
